esmGFP: AI Simulates 500 Million Years of Evolution to Create Novel Protein

Researchers at EvolutionaryScale and the Arc Institute have developed esmGFP, a green fluorescent protein designed entirely by the AI model ESM3. By simulating 500 million years of molecular evolution, the AI created a protein that does not exist in nature but functions effectively in laboratory settings. This breakthrough demonstrates AI’s potential in bioengineering and synthetic biology.

Technical Highlights:

  • ESM3 Model: Trained on 770 billion protein sequences to predict and generate novel protein structures.
  • Functional Validation: The synthesized protein exhibited fluorescence, confirming its functionality.
  • Applications: Potential uses in medicine, environmental science, and synthetic biology.
